Postpartum infection is now one of the leading causes of maternal mortality and morbidity in Africa. Every year, approximately 250,000 African women die in, during or immediately after child-birth. The Maama Kit contains basic materials to facilitate clean and safe delivery and reduce the risk of deadly infection to the mother and her newborn baby.

What is the Maama Kit?Postpartum infection is now one of the leading causes of maternal mortality and morbidity in Africa. Every year,approximately 250,000 African women die in, during or immediately after child-birth. The Maama Kit contains basic materials to facilitate clean and safe delivery and reduce the risk of deadly infection to the mother and her newborn baby.

The Maama Kit consists of:

  • 2 pairs of gloves to prevent bacterial infections and HIV
  • 2 new razor blades to cut the umbilical cord
  • 1 bar of soap
  • 2 gauze pads for cleaning the eyes of the newborn
  • 8 sanitary towels for the mother
  • 9 oz of cotton wool
  • 1 polyethylene sheet on which the mother gives birth
